During the 1880s, while in his mid-fifties, Brahms retired from composing, believing he had exhausted his creative output. However, he was so inspired by the playing of clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld that in the summer of 1891 he wrote both this sublime work and the Clarinet Trio Op. 114 , specifically for Mühlfeld.
We are both fortunate and excited to have the opportunity to hear this rarely performed arrangement written by the composer in 1892 for viola and string quartet and performed for us by violist Mikhail Zemtsov, joined by violinists Daniel Rowland and Floor Le Coultre, violist Dana Zemtsov and cellist Maja Bogdanović.
